Education Resources

Te Taumutu Rūnanga have a long and proud history of working with schools to support them in being culturally responsive to Māori students.

Te Taumutu Rūnanga work with the Early Childhood Education Organisations and 37 schools and under our korowai kaitiaki~ protective cloak, most of whom work with the English Medium Curriculum.  Most of the students are in mainstream education so the key priority would be influencing the curriculum so whānau could see themselves reflected within the school’s environment and teaching.

Taumutu whānau have a tradition of involvement in education and Ngāti Moki has established itself as a learning marae and its members continue to promote this kaupapa.  In the past Riki Ellison and Ruku Arahanga willingly shared their knowledge with many groups from kindergartens and schools through to Universities at Te Awhitu house and the marae.  Similarly through the years Cath Brown enouraged groups from Christchurch Teachers’ College, CPIT, the Universities, weavers and artists as well as the schools.

The whole rūnanga has been involved in encouraging learning by sharing their stories, their knowledge of the environment, the rich history of the area, the tikanga and values of Ngāti Moki and by showing the hospitality which is traditional to all marae.

Taumutu has held annual education hui at Ngāti Moki since 2004 inviting around schools  and now ECE under our kaitiaki~care .  Schools come to discuss the issues and aspirations of their tamariki with Taumutu whānau.  These discussions have led to the development of Te Taumutu Rūnanga’s  education projects under the Memorandum of Understanding between Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and the Ministry of Education.
